PNG to ICO Converter (Free Online)

Convert PNG images to ICO icon files in your browser. Pick icon sizes (16–256px), download a multi-resolution .ico for favicons and Windows. No upload to server.

Use the tool above to turn a PNG into a multi-size ICO file. It is useful for favicons, desktop shortcuts, and app icons on Windows.

How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Upload your PNG (drag and drop or browse). For best results, start from a square image or a large PNG (at least 256×256).
  2. Choose icon sizes to embed. The Recommended preset includes common sizes (256 down to 16). You can add or remove sizes such as 48 or 32 for taskbar and list views.
  3. Click Download .ico. Your browser builds the file locally — nothing is sent to Game Funtastic servers.

Tips for sharp icons

  • Use a high-resolution source PNG so smaller layers stay crisp.
  • Transparent PNGs stay transparent in the ICO (via PNG layers inside the icon file).
  • If your image is not square, we crop to a centered square so every layer matches standard icon dimensions.

FAQ — PNG to ICO

Will my PNG lose quality when converted to ICO?

Quality is kept for each selected size. If your PNG is smaller than a chosen size (for example a 64×64 source with 256 selected), the tool scales up that layer, which can look softer. Start with a large PNG when possible.

Does this work for website favicons?

Yes. Browsers accept ICO and often PNG favicons; ICO is still widely used because one file can hold multiple resolutions for tabs, bookmarks, and high-DPI displays.

Is my file uploaded to your servers?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and canvas.

Can ICO files contain multiple sizes?

Yes. Unlike a single PNG, an ICO can bundle several images (16×16, 32×32, 256×256, etc.) so Windows and browsers can pick the best match.

Why does Windows Explorer show “16 × 16” (or 128 × 128) when I included 256×256?

File Properties → Details often shows one embedded size — frequently the smallest layer in the file, not the largest. So if your ICO includes 16×16 and 256×256, Explorer may still list 16 × 16. If you only embed 256 and 128, it may show 128 × 128 (the smaller of the two). The 256×256 image is still inside the ICO; use an icon viewer or image editor that lists all layers to confirm.

Why is my ICO file smaller than another site’s for the “same” settings?

File size depends on how many sizes are embedded and how well each PNG compresses (your browser’s PNG encoder vs another service). More layers usually mean a larger file. Our Recommended preset includes all standard sizes we offer (16–256) so results are closer to full multi-resolution icons.
